We’re going to talk about something that has already been talked about a lot this year.
Pantone’s Colour of the Year.
Every year, the announcement arrives and suddenly the internet is full of articles telling us what the colour means, how we’re going to see it everywhere, and how we should be incorporating it into our lives.
So why is The Genie adding another article to the conversation?
Because there is something couples need to remember when it comes to wedding trends:
You don’t have to follow them.
And that is especially true this year.
Meet Cloud Dancer
Pantone selected PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer as its 2026 Colour of the Year.
It is a soft, airy white rather than a stark, bright white. Pantone describes it as a calming and versatile shade, and positions it as a colour that can act as a foundation for other colours rather than competing with them.
It is also a somewhat historic choice.
Cloud Dancer is the first white shade selected as Pantone’s Colour of the Year since the program began in 1999.
And honestly?
For weddings, that makes a lot of sense.
White Is Hardly New to Weddings
Here’s the funny thing about making a soft white the wedding colour of the year:
Brides have been wearing white for a very long time.
White wedding dresses aren’t exactly a new trend.
Neither are white flowers, white linens, white stationery, white cakes or white décor.
So couples shouldn’t suddenly feel as though they need to redesign their wedding because Pantone has declared white fashionable for 2026.
If anything, Cloud Dancer is a reminder that something doesn’t have to be new to be beautiful.
Where Cloud Dancer Could Work
Because it is a soft neutral, Cloud Dancer can become almost anything you want it to be.
It could be the foundation of a completely neutral wedding with soft whites, creams and subtle natural tones.
It could be paired with greenery for a garden-inspired wedding.
It could provide contrast against deep jewel tones.
It could be combined with blues for something cooler and more sophisticated.
It could work with blush, dusty rose or other soft colours for a romantic palette.
Or it could simply be the quiet background colour that allows the rest of your wedding colours to take centre stage.
Pantone itself presents Cloud Dancer as a versatile structural colour that can work with both subtle combinations and stronger contrasts.
And that versatility is probably its biggest strength.
You Don’t Have to Use It Everywhere
This is where The Genie wants couples to take a step back.
When a colour becomes a trend, it can be very easy to think:
“If we’re using this colour, everything needs to be this colour.”
It doesn’t.
Your wedding colour palette doesn’t need to appear identically in every single element of your wedding.
Maybe Cloud Dancer is the colour of your stationery.
Maybe it appears in your linens.
Maybe it is incorporated into your flowers.
Maybe it is simply the neutral background that allows your actual wedding colours to stand out.
Or maybe you don’t use it at all.
That’s perfectly fine too.
Don’t Let a Trend Choose Your Wedding
There is nothing wrong with looking at wedding trends for inspiration.
In fact, trends can be a great way to discover ideas you may never have considered.
But there is a difference between being inspired by a trend and allowing a trend to dictate your wedding.
Your wedding should still look and feel like you.
If you have always loved deep burgundy, there is no reason to abandon it because this year’s colour happens to be a soft white.
If you dreamed about a colourful spring wedding, you don’t need to turn everything neutral.
If your favourite colour is purple, purple doesn’t suddenly become wrong because Pantone chose something else.
The Colour of the Year is a trend.
Your wedding is personal.
Those two things don’t have to be the same.
Think About Longevity
There is another reason The Genie encourages couples to be careful about building their entire wedding around a trend.
Your wedding photographs aren’t going anywhere.
Years from now, you will still have those photographs hanging on your walls and appearing in your albums.
A colour that feels exciting because it is everywhere right now may not have the same significance to you five, ten or twenty years from now.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use trends.
It simply means you should choose them because you genuinely like them.
Cloud Dancer has an advantage here.
A soft white is unlikely to suddenly look dated because white has never really gone out of style.
But that doesn’t mean every couple needs to embrace it.
The Genie Says: Use Trends as Inspiration, Not Instructions
There is nothing wrong with looking at Pantone’s Colour of the Year and thinking, “I love that.”
There is also nothing wrong with looking at it and thinking, “That’s not for me.”
Both are perfectly acceptable answers.
Use trends to spark ideas.
Use your own preferences to make the final decisions.
And if Cloud Dancer happens to be exactly what you were looking for, wonderful.
You now have an entire year of inspiration waiting for you.
But if your perfect wedding palette was already sitting in your head long before Pantone made its announcement, don’t change it just because someone else declared a new colour of the year.
The best wedding colour isn’t necessarily the one that’s trending.
It’s the one that makes you look around your wedding and think, “This feels like us.”
